Is Your Child Buckled Up Safely?

September 16-22 is National Child Passenger Safety Week.

Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 12. Based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 2010 crash data, nearly two children (ages 12 and younger)  were killed and 325 injured each day in automobile accidents.

The fatality rate for children in automobile accidents could be reduced by half is the correct child safety seat were always used.

The West Chester Township Fire Department offers free Child Safety Seat Inspections in order to protect children riding in an automobile. It is critical that child car seats are installed correctly AND that they are used every time. The West Chester Fire Department offers a free child car seat installation check to make sure the child seat offers the best protection possible.

All West Chester Fire Department child car seat technicians work 24-hour shifts, with 48 hours off. To learn more about their schedules and/or leave a message with a technician, call 777-1133 or email carsseattech@westchesteroh.org. Because of the complications of their schedules and emergency calls, all technicians coordinate their own appointments.

Technicians request that an attempt be made to install the car seat before the scheduled appointment. Utilize the child car seat manual, as well as the vehicle manual (see "child restraint" in the index), to attempt installation. Also, please bring all manuals to the scheduled appointment.
