The Communications Center is a state-of-the-art facility that dispatches police, fire and emergency medical, as well as all other Township departments. Communications officers dispatch approximately 60,000 police calls annually, and several thousand fire and EMS calls. The center also processes all non-emergency calls into the police department. Communications officers receive as many as 500,000 calls annually.
Communications officers have advanced training in CPR and can instruct callers in CPR techniques while rescue teams are enroute. They are a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) center that receives all emergency 911 calls. This system automatically provides numbers for callback in the event the caller is unable to speak, and addresses for immediate officer response. In addition, a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) is utilized for the hearing impaired.
The Communications Center is linked electronically to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS). Strict security is required for operation of these terminals and information provided through them. A full-time Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC) officer is assigned to monitor all activities in this area.
Communications Officers ask that if you dial 911 by accident, please speak to the operator instead of simply hanging up the phone to ensure a proper response.
