Fire Department - Safety Education Programs

The West Chester Fire Department offers many safety programs and classes for residents and businesses. Programs can be geared to individual groups.

For more information about any of these programs, please contact Captain Scott Brooks at 759-7243 or sbrooks@westchesteroh.org.

Some programs offered:

Explorers: A new program for young people between the ages of 14 and 21 with an interest in fire service. Explorer program is offered through The West Chester Fire Department and Boy Scouts of America and provides the opportunity for young people to participate in training and drills alongside professional firefighters, EMTs and paramedics. Application

Birthday Parties: The West Chester Fire Department can arrive at your birthday party (based on availability) and help celebrate with family and friends interacting with firefighters showing off the truck, tools, and equipment.

Station Tours: The West Chester Fire Department has five fire stations available for tours.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Giveaways: The West Chester Fire Department has smoke and carbon monoxide detectors available for those in need of a detector.

Child Safety Seat Inspections: In order to protect the children who use them, it is critical that child car seats are installed correctly. The West Chester Fire Department offers a free child car seat installation check to make sure the child seat offers the best protection possible.

All West Chester Fire Department child car seat technicians work 24-hour shifts, with 48 hours off. To learn more about their schedules and/or leave a message with a technician, call 777-1133 or email carsseattech@westchesteroh.org. Because of the complications of their schedules and emergency calls, all technicians coordinate their own appointments.

Technicians request that an attempt be made to install the car seat before the scheduled appointment. Utilize the child car seat manual, as well as the vehicle manual (see "child restraint" in the index), to attempt installation. Also, please bring all manuals to the scheduled appointment.

Career Firefighter/car seat technician: Station 71: Mark Hanmer, Unit 1

Part-time Firefighters/car seat technicians: Station 71: Ian Cox, Unit 2; Station 72: Jason Witte, Unit 2; and Station 75: Dane Fienning, Unit 2.

Hearing Impaired Smoke Detector Giveaways: This program provides a specialized unit that can alert hearing-impaired residents of a smoke alarm by vibrating the bed and flashing a light. The West Chester-Liberty Community Foundation makes the funding for these special detectors possible.

Commercial and Residential Knox Box: The Knox Box is a secure safe that is mounted on the outside of your home or business. A key to open the door is placed on the inside so the fire department can enter without damaging the door to gain entry.

Residential Fire Safety Inspections: The West Chester Fire Department is available to conduct home fire safety surveys. Inspectors will provide suggestions for making your home safer. This free service is provided to all residents to help eliminate possible fire hazards in your home. Did you know that nearly one-third of all fires occur in the home? Many lives and millions of dollars of property are lost each year. Taking the time to allow the fire department to conduct a quick, but thorough fire safety survey of your home will greatly reduce the chance of a home fire developing.

Juvenile Fire Setters: Children set fires for a variety of reasons. If a child plays with fire it does not necessarily mean that they are a problem child. This program stresses prevention education and provides counseling to children and their families to change the dangerous fire-setting behavior.
