The community of West Chester rests in the southeast corner of Butler County, and covers approximately thirty-six square miles. The police department was established in 1967 and has grown from a small contingent of officers to a department of 83 sworn police officers and 11 civilian police employees.

West Chester is divided into three districts, each commanded by a police lieutenant. That district commander is responsible for coordinating the policing strategies utilized to address the specific needs and activities associated with each district.
