Butler County roundabouts by the numbers

Post Date:07/28/2017 1:41 PM

In the court of public opinion, the jury may still be out on the advantages and disadvantages of roundabouts. But according to a recent report from the Butler County Engineer’s Office (BCEO), the case in favor is a slam dunk.

Cerkl_3215Roundabouts are becoming more popular in the area, and for good reason. While not necessarily the answer for every intersection, a roundabout may be determined to be the least costly and most effective solution at certain locations for a number of factors.

In agreement with other state and federal organizations, the BCEO has determined local roundabouts are increasing safety, improving traffic flow, lessening the severity of accidents and helping reduce vehicle emissions. And, due to a roundabout’s smaller “footprint,” they also require less land and right-of-way acquisition.

Still skeptical? Consider these statistics provided by the BCEO in July 2017:

100 percent reduction in serious and fatal crashes.

80 percent fewer injury crashes.

60 percent reduction in overall crashes.

30 percent increase in vehicle flow through roundabouts versus signalized intersections during peak traffic hours.
