Another new playground for Keehner Park in 2018
Another Keehner Park playground is scheduled to be replaced and ready for play by spring 2018.
Plans to replace one of the two playgrounds on the east side of the park, near the basketball/tennis courts and ball fields, were approved by the West Chester Board of Trustees in November. The capital improvement project is not to exceed $42,000.
“Like the west playground, which was replaced a couple years ago, this equipment was well-loved and reached the end of its useful life,” Community Services Director Tim Franck said. “These playgrounds typically last about 20 years before safety concerns, cost of repairs and availability of replacement parts makes maintenance impractical.”
The new playground will include four slides, monkey bars, a climbing pole, a balance beam and an “Xcelerator” spinning feature designed for children ages 5 to 12. The existing playground, designed for kids ages 2 to 5, and swing set will remain in place.
The project was awarded to David Williams and Associates and the equipment will be manufactured by GameTime. The same companies also teamed up to build the new playground on the west side of Keehner Park in 2016, as well as the boundless playground at Beckett Park in 2010.
Major improvements to Keehner Park since 2015 have included new playgrounds, remodeled restroom facilities, staining of the amphitheatre, cedar roof shingles and a re-finished porch for the Cabin in the Clearing, and a re-paved west parking loop. A project to re-roof all park shelters is underway and expected to be finished in 2019.
Keehner Park features rentable shelters, two playground areas, creek-side wooded trails, recreational sports courts/fields, and more. The 123-acre property is annually home to numerous free community events including children’s nature programs, music and arts events, and holiday celebrations like Pioneer Christmas coming up Sunday, Dec. 10.
