SWAT earns top awards at international training competition

Post Date:11/20/2018 4:03 PM

The SWAT team that went viral with its Lip Sync Challenge video has earned major accolades for its tactical training and professionalism among fellow law enforcement agencies from around the globe.

The West Chester Police Department received top marks at the 2018 SWAT Round-Up International in Orlando, Fla., taking home the gold for Top Team with Less Than 100 Sworn Members and Top National Team, which goes to the best American team outside of the state of Florida.

West Chester SWAT officers finished 15th in the overall points standings among a field of 54 police departments of all sizes hailing from places at home and abroad including Charlotte, Palm Beach and San Antonio, to Hungary, Sao Paulo and the United Arab Emirates.

The round-up is comprised of five events over four days, requiring officers to test their physical fitness and marksmanship. Although many teams that compete are designated as full-time SWAT members for their departments, West Chester SWAT team members function dually as full-time community police officers with regular daily duties who are only specially dispatched as a SWAT team on an as-needed basis.

The 36th annual SWAT Round-Up International competition was Nov. 11-16, 2018. The competition is hosted each year by the Florida SWAT Association as a premiere training and education, professional development and networking program for law enforcement officers from across the world. West Chester Police Department participation was supported by sponsors.
