West Chester recognized for sound financial reporting
Financial overseers have once again recognized West Chester Township officials for outstanding bookkeeping practices.
For a sixth consecutive year, West Chester received the Ohio Auditor of State Award with Distinction. Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds presented the award for the 2017 audit year at the Dec. 11 Board of Trustees meeting on behalf of the state.
“You’re not going to get this award if you have any slightest slip-up in your financial controls,” Reynolds said. “The bottom line is to get [the award] you got to be at the top, you got to be on your game – and it’s not just at the top, it’s all the folks working throughout the Township making sure all the financial controls are being followed and policies in Ohio Revised Code.”
To be eligible for the award, entities must meet specific criteria upon filing. The report cannot contain any findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, Single Audit findings or questioned costs.
“Your Township has done something that very few townships do and very few counties also do,” Reynolds said, noting his office has received the award three times by comparison.
Fiscal Officer Bruce Jones, Director of Finance Ken Keim and the finance staff were also separately recognized with a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its CAFR.
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.
