Citizen Police Academy - April 3
Wonder what it's like to be a cop? Enroll in Citizen Police Academy, a free 10-week program giving real people the opportunity to walk-the-walk and talk-the-talk on the police beat. Spring sessions start Wednesday, April 3 at West Chester Police headquarters. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Can’t make the April session but still want to be involved? The fall session begins Wednesday, Sept. 4.
RASKALS – April 27
RASKALS (Random Acts of Simple Kindness Affecting Local Seniors) is a community-wide service program benefiting local senior citizens. On Saturday, April 27, volunteer teams help out with simple yard clean-up and outdoor chores for older residents at their homes. Work is coordinated by West Chester Township. Volunteers unavailable to work on April 27 may contact organizers to be paired with a client for an alternate date. RASKALS meets again in fall on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Buckeye BBQ Fest – May 17-18
Bands, brews and BBQ – and fun are the focus of this annual two-day event on The Square @ Union Centre. Guests can enjoy live music, food & beverage, and more. Buckeye BBQ Fest is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Rotary Club of West Chester/Liberty, with all proceeds going to support local, national and international charitable programs. Volunteer shifts are available beginning the morning of Thursday, May 16 through afternoon Sunday, May 19.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7696 invites scout groups to place flags on graves each year before the community’s Memorial Day Parade and ceremony. This activity takes place at Brookside Cemetery on West Chester Road, adjacent to Township Hall, 9113 Cincinnati Dayton Road, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 25.
Memorial Day Parade – May 27
March in the Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27! The parade along Cincinnati Dayton Road is organized by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7696 to honor those who have served and continue to serve in our military. The morning parade promotes a family-friendly atmosphere. All participants must agree to follow the guidelines and rules set forth by VFW Post 7696.
Self-defense Classes – Year-round
West Chester Police officers offer a wide range of hands-on self-defenses classes designed to train civilians to react confidently and effectively when personal safety is at risk. Various classes for men and women, women only, and college-bound females are taking place in April and June. Private sessions can be coordinated for businesses, groups and organizations with 10 or more participants.
Volunteer Camera Operator – Year-round
West Chester TV manages three public access television stations, which are available to residents with Spectrum. Programming is also re-broadcast on Vimeo and YouTube. Volunteers are needed year-round to operate cameras at community events such as concerts, parades, sports games and more. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
CPR & First Aid Classes – Year-round
The West Chester Fire Department offers First Aid and CPR training utilizing the guidelines set forth by the American Heart Association. Certification is good for two years from the date of completion. Classes are conducted at the Fire Headquarters, 9119 Cincinnati Dayton Road, and scheduling is flexible. West Chester Fire Department can accommodate individuals and groups or businesses.
Senior Van Transportation Service – Year-round
Volunteers manage and operate a community-wide transportation service for senior citizens. The service is available to West Chester residents age 60 and older and handicapped adults. The Senior Van Transportation Service takes clients to doctor's appointments, the grocery store and pharmacy, and for recreational and social gatherings. Volunteer drivers and dispatchers are needed; vehicles are provided.
