Road closures Aug. 3-4 for USA Triathlon
For an unprecedented eighth year, the best young triathletes from across the country will be in West Chester August 3-4 during the USA Triathlon Youth and Junior National Championship. All levels of youth triathletes from beginners to the nation’s top rising multi-sport stars will be participating in the two-day event at the Voice of America Park and on surrounding roads.
More than a thousand triathletes from all across the USA will take part, with many of them in the developmental pipeline to become future Olympians. West Chester has been selected as home to the event, which has generated millions of dollars in the local economy through hotel stays and dining at local restaurants, for approaching a decade.
Some road closures will be necessary on Cox Road and Liberty Way to accommodate the course and protect the athletes. Road closures will be in effect from about 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4. Access will be maintained to all local businesses from Tylersville and Cox Road (south of VOA Park Drive), but motorists should expect delays in the area.
Roads closed during the event times are as follows:
- Cox Road between Liberty Way and the primary entrance of the VOA Retail Center.
- Liberty Way between Cox Road and Butler-Warren Road.
Those visiting Cox Road businesses, including the VOA Retail Center, must access the businesses from Tylersville Road during the closures. Businesses on Service Center Drive will be accessible from Liberty Way only.
Access to Voice of America MetroPark will be restricted to the Butler Warren Road gate from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Normal access to the park and all activity areas will resume during the evening hours. The general public will not have access to the Voice of America Lake walking path, the Butler-Warren Road walking path or water activities on the lake while the athletes practice and compete between about 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The playground area at Voice of America MetroPark will be accessible by parking at the south end of the park near the Athletic Complex and walking. Please note, this is quite a distance, but unavoidable in an effort to keep the triathletes and guests safe. Use of Wiggly Field and walking elsewhere in the park, on marked trails, is permitted.
While no races will take place on Friday, Aug. 3, motorists should be especially alert to an increase in the number of vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic on Cox Road, Tylersville Road and Liberty Way as athletes prepare for the events.
