West Chester re-evaluates summer events

Large community events organized by the Township for June 2020 are canceled.
Post Date:05/07/2020 9:55 AM

One of the defining characteristics of our community is how we bring friends and neighbors together to celebrate. In particular, the summer event season has become a cherished tradition in West Chester.

For these reasons, we are sad to announce the difficult decision to cancel large community events scheduled for the month of June 2020. This includes the Touch A Truck event, initially planned for June 12, and all eight Thursday and Saturday night summer concert performances for the month.

“This is a really difficult decision for us,” said Barbara Wilson, director of Public Information & Engagement. “Celebrating together is one of our favorite things to do as a community, but after much consideration we just don’t think our community will be ready for large events in June.”

Unfortunately, the challenges associated with the size and scope of these types of gatherings leaves little choice. During the COVID-19 public health crisis, everyone has been asked to make compromises to balance personal comforts against the health, safety and wellbeing of our community at-large.

While we won’t be able to see the familiar faces of our residents and stakeholders come together at large public events this June, West Chester is holding out hope for the weeks and months beyond. At this time, summer concerts and events are scheduled to move forward from July 2020 onward. Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update the status of future events on a month-by-month basis as more information becomes available.

Additionally, West Chester will consider some “virtual” events to enjoy with your family at home, and options to add free summer concerts to the community calendar for the month of September, weather permitting.

West Chester's Farmers Market and small-scale gatherings, like Acoustic Jam and Second Sunday Kite Flying, will continue to operate with extra precautions in place.
