A Look Back at Fire Prevention Month: Staying Safe with Everyday Devices

West Chester Fire Department is reflecting on October’s Fire Prevention Month, which centered on preventing lithium-ion battery fires.

Post Date:11/12/2025 11:48 AM

Fire safety is not what it used to be. While candles, kitchen appliances, and cords are still a concern, the biggest risks come from everyday devices. Smartphones, e-Bikes, battery-powered tools, toys, and even vape pens are all powered by lithium-ion batteries.

Danger of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that is widely used in modern electronic devices. These batteries make life more convenient, but they can become hazardous when punctured, overcharged, or exposed to heat. These conditions can trigger thermal runaway, a chemical reaction that can result in explosions and fires.

West Chester firefighters have seen instances of thermal runaway, from battery-powered tools to vape pens left unattended or plugged into faulty USB outlets.

What You Can Do

Stay safe by practicing these simple tips when using lithium-ion batteries:

  • Use only manufacturer-approved chargers.
  • Plug devices into wall outlets, not power strips.
  • Charge while you are awake, not overnight.
  • Avoid flammable surfaces.
  • Check battery condition regularly and dispose of damaged cords or devices immediately.
  • Never try to repair a lithium-ion battery yourself.
  • Store large battery-powered devices in garages or sheds.
  • Do not place lithium-ion batteries in your trash or recycling bins, as they require special handling. Learn how to properly dispose of batteries.

Why It Matters

By understanding the risks and handling lithium-ion batteries safely, you're protecting your home and the people you love most.
