West Chester Township has selected MKSK, a Columbus-based land use planning and urban design firm, to lead a corridor study focused on a key commercial area along Union Centre Boulevard. The study will help guide future development and redevelopment within the business corridor, which extends between Ohio 747 and Cincinnati-Dayton Road.
Last fall, West Chester Township adopted a temporary development moratorium within the corridor area, one of the community’s busiest commercial areas, to allow time for the corridor study and long-term planning effort. The moratorium applies only to new buildings and large building expansions, while allowing most improvements to existing properties to continue.
“Our goal is to create a vibrant corridor that supports our existing business owners, attracts future strategic development, and creates a high quality of life for our residents,” said Lisa Brown, West Chester Township Administrator. “MKSK will help us make a strategic framework to guide future development and redevelopment, one that supports both economic vitality and community well-being.”
MKSK has worked on planning efforts for projects including the Arena District in Columbus, the Chattanooga Riverfront District Plan, the Downtown Toledo Master Plan, and the Cleveland Cuyahoga Riverfront Plan. The firm’s experience includes land use planning, urban design, and redevelopment strategies for public and commercial spaces.
The study will evaluate current land use patterns, development trends, transportation and traffic considerations, and long-term economic opportunities.
“With limited developable land remaining, thoughtful planning is essential to support continued investment and a strong business environment,” Brown said. “We look forward to working with MKSK and engaging with our business owners and residents on this project.”
In Phase 1 of the study, MKSK will evaluate existing conditions and gathering input to inform future recommendations. Residents, businesses, and property owners within the corridor will have opportunities to share input and shape future recommendations. Stakeholder can expect to see notices for input and feedback opportunities in the early spring.
