Spring Cleaning for Fire Safety

Post Date:03/12/2026 1:00 PM

The West Chester Fire Department wants to help you tackle spring cleaning with a focus on fire prevention and proper disposal of hazardous items. Spring cleaning is an opportunity to identify and reduce hidden hazards in your home.

Clear the Clutter

Remove accumulated clutter in hallways, closets, and basements, especially combustible materials like paper, cardboard, and fabrics. Keep “escape paths” clear so everyone can exit easily in an emergency.

Inspect Electrical Items

Check cords and chargers for frays or damage, and replace appliances with damaged wiring. Don’t overload power strips or outlets.

Store Flammable Materials Safely

Store paints, solvents, and flammable liquids in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources. Keep them in their original, labeled containers. Dispose of any household hazardous waste according to manufacturer’s instructions or through local programs.

Use Local Household Hazardous Waste & Recycling Programs

Butler County’s Recycling & Solid Waste District offers special collections for hard-to-discard items. While specific dates for 2026 Spring/Summer events are typically posted closer to the season (often summer months), these programs allow residents to responsibly dispose of items like paints, automotive fluids, solvents, batteries and more instead of leaving them in the house. Butler County, OH

Place Grills and Fire Pits Safely

Keep grills, fire pits, and open flames at least 10 feet from buildings, decks, and dry vegetation. Clean grease buildup on to avoid flare-ups.

Dispose of Yard Waste

Dispose of yard waste in proper compost or mulch bins rather than burning it, which can pose unintended fire hazards.

By combining thoughtful cleanup with responsible disposal and recycling, you’re doing your part to protect your home and community. The West Chester Fire Department is here to support you - stay safe this season!
