As Independence Day approaches, the West Chester Fire Department encourages residents to celebrate safely, responsibly and in accordance with Ohio law.

Fireworks are a popular part of many Fourth of July celebrations, but they can also cause serious injuries and property damage when used improperly. Taking a few simple precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone.

Know the Law

Under Ohio Revised Code §3743.45, consumer fireworks may generally be discharged on private property with the permission of the property owner during designated holiday periods, including:

• July 3, 4 and 5
• The Friday, Saturday and Sunday immediately before and after July 4

Permitted discharge hours are from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Residents are reminded to be respectful of their neighbors when using fireworks. Excessive or unreasonable noise may violate the West Chester Township Noise Ordinance.

Fireworks should never be used recklessly or in a manner that endangers people, property or the environment.

Fireworks Safety Tips

Before lighting any fireworks, keep these safety recommendations in mind:

• Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
• Keep a bucket of water, garden hose or fire extinguisher nearby.
• Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, mulch and other combustible materials.
• Never allow young children to handle or ignite fireworks.
• Keep spectators at a safe distance.
• Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
• Never relight a malfunctioning or "dud" firework. Wait at least 20 minutes and then soak it thoroughly with water.
• Soak all used fireworks in water before placing them in the trash.

Sparklers Are Not Harmless

Many people consider sparklers a safer alternative to traditional fireworks, but they can still cause serious injuries.

Sparklers can burn at temperatures exceeding 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to cause severe burns and ignite clothing. Children should always be closely supervised when using sparklers, and adults should exercise caution when handling them.

Be Considerate of Others

The loud noises associated with fireworks can be distressing for pets, veterans, and individuals with sensory sensitivities.

Consider notifying neighbors in advance if you plan to use fireworks and be mindful of the permitted discharge times. Taking others into consideration can help everyone enjoy the holiday safely and comfortably.

Fires, burns, and other injuries are among the most common emergencies reported during Independence Day celebrations. If a fire or emergency occurs, call 9-1-1 immediately.
