The West Chester Fire Department will begin its annual Hydrant Flushing Program for District 73 on Aug. 31, 2026.

Firehouse 73, located on Duff Drive, will flush hydrants on weekdays through Tuesday, Sept. 22. Saturdays and Sundays will be used as make-up days for hydrants not completed during the previous week due to weather or other high-priority calls.

When hydrants are flushed on your street, your water may appear cloudy, milky, yellow or brownish. This is common during hydrant flushing. Residents should run cold water for 2 to 3 minutes at the lowest area of the home, such as a basement laundry tub.

Cloudy or milky water is usually caused by dissolved air bubbles and is harmless. It should clear within a few minutes. Rusty or yellow water is caused by rust deposits stirred up during flushing and will generally clear within 2 to 3 hours after the hydrant is closed.

Rusty water can stain laundry. Residents should avoid doing laundry on the day their street is scheduled for hydrant flushing. If clothes do become stained, keep them moist and use a rust remover according to the package directions.
