Planning & Zoning
The Community Development Department is responsible for administering West Chester's zoning and property maintenance codes. With the Township's Land Use Plan as a guide, planning and zoning staff work closely with developers and property owners to ensure the highest and best use of the Township's valuable real estate.
Nearly every project, whether new construction or home remodeling, requires interaction with the knowledgeable Community Development Department staff. The permitting process is made as simple as possible (and in most cases free!) and protects the property owner from inferior work and/or unpermitted work that could negatively affect future value.
Please contact Community Development if unsure whether project or change requires a permit. A property advisor can easily answer most preliminary questions. The following is a partial list of common projects and situations for which a zoning certificate is necessary:
- New construction
- Building addition
- Remodeling
- Above-ground and in-ground swimming pool
- Attached or detached garage
- Shed or storage building
- Fence
- Deck
- New sign or sign change
- Change in use
- Home occupation
The Community Development Department staff works closely with several appointed boards, commissions and committees to support the Township Board of Trustees in matters related to development of the community.
